Heer Oberst of Infantry Tunic and Greatcoat

Shown below are two period photos of Oberst Alfred Wittmann
in a tunic which has characteristics that appear to match this piece. Note the grey inner branch color on
the collar tabs (should be white for Infantry), the offset ribbon bar which
is oriented towards the buttons (as you can see, the ribbon loops on the
tunic are also offset toward the buttons), the matching breast eagle (the
swastika has been partially de-nazified) and the placement and spacing of the
buttons on the front of the tunic in relation to the pockets. Neither the tunic or greatcoat are
named, but the period photos seem to indicate it is probably the same
tunic. The consignor reports that
the coat and tunic were purchased from the family of Wittmann sometime during
the 1960’s by a U.S. veteran on occupation duty in Germany. |
